EUROPEAN GREATS

Course Details

06 September - 10 September 2010

This five-day course examines scenes from Chekhov and Ibsen. Fresh approaches to the work of these authors is encouraged, along with looking at how the themes of these plays are still urgent and relevant to us today.

Solo speeches and scenes are explored with a director and participants are asked to thoroughly review their process of rehearsal in accordance with the material.

The course is aimed at those with some experience of acting who want the opportunity to explore these writers from the point of view of the performer. Throughout the five days students and teacher reflect collectively through formative assessment.

This is often a demanding process. Owing to the constraints of time, and the thorough nature of the formative assessment, we do not feel that individual summative assessment is necessary or valuable.

The week concludes with a short informal presentation to the staff and the other students in the group. This is seen as an opportunity to share work in development free from the pressures of showing a more “polished” performance.

Overview of the course

Participants work in groups of 14 to 16 people, led by a director, with support from a voice and a movement instructor. Tutors are drawn from the Academy’s senior staff and directors along with distinguished guest teachers from the profession. A certificate, stating the minimum number of contact hours, is awarded on successful completion of the course.

Hours of work

Classes generally take place between 10:00am and 6:00pm, Monday to Friday. Some evening work may be required. You will be expected to treat classes as professional rehearsal calls. Punctuality is essential and records are kept of class attendance and taken into account when the RADA certificate is issued.

What to bring

Clothing suitable for movement work. Female students may find a full length practice skirt useful for rehearsal.
