THEATRE DESIGN

Course Details

The two year set and costume design course covers the extensive process of designing for performance. Studio based design projects are aimed at developing specialist skill in respect of the following:

  • Script analysis and research
  • Director/designer collaboration
  • Creative and personal interpretation
  • Visual languages available to design  
  • Presentation of 2-D and 3-D visuals
  • Scale model making
  • Technical and perspective drawing
  • Life drawing
  • Design presentations

Training also includes technical theatre, stagecraft, construction, scenic art, prop making, wardrobe, lighting and health and safety.

Supplementary classes include:

  • First Aid (students recieve a First Aid Certificate)
  • History of theatre
  • Specialist career development

The student’s final year at RADA expands creative identity through design for production. Roles include Assistant Designer, and Set and Costume Designer for RADA’s public productions. At the end of year two is the 'Graduate Design Tree', a public exhibition of projects and design work through sketchbooks, storyboarding, prop drawings, costume sketches, white card models and final presentational models.

This course leads to the award of a postgraduate diploma in Theatre Design.
