Graduate Certificate in Theatre Directing

Course Outline
This one year course trains directors with a special emphasis on their ability to understand the acting process. The course aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of both the creative and technical sides of theatre production and also to give you an introduction to the ’business’ of theatre. During the year, you are attached to an external production with an established theatre director, offering an invaluable insight into direction at a
professional level. At the end of the course you are given the opportunity to direct professional actors in a production for a public audience, where you will experience how to manage all stages in the development of a production from the initial choice of a script to the final performances staged in RADA’s John Gielgud Theatre.

Through this course we hope to encourage exciting new talents to bring their vision to the challenging world of theatre and to be ready to embark on their working lives.

The training covers:
• Developing an understanding of the acting process through participation in first term acting classes
• Exploring the director/designer relationship through a design project
• Exploring the director’s relationship with writers and new writing
• Working on rehearsed readings
• A technical attachment to a RADA production
• An attachment to a professional theatre company or taking the role of assistant director on a RADA production
• An attachment as Assistant Directorin a professional theatre company Graduates from this course have gone on to work as Staff Director at the Royal National Theatre, have assisted Nancy Meckler and Neil Bartlett at the Royal Shakespeare Company and have even founded their own company dedicated to new writing.
