Course Outline
In four terms, you will learn how to interpret designs, estimate materials and time, cost and budget a project. Your training will provide you with all the skills you need to take on the role of Scenic Artist on the Academy’s public productions, where you will work with professional directors and designers. Throughout your course you will
be encouraged to keep a visual diary, develop your portfolio and build professional connections. In your final term your project work will be exhibited in RADA’s GBS Theatre in the ‘Technical Tree’ giving you the opportunity to talk about your work with an invited group of industry contacts.

The training covers:
• role of Scenic Artist on RADA productions
• scenic interpretation and sampling
• life drawing
• spray techniques
• scenic drawing
• texture
• woodgraining
• marbling
• light and shadows
• trompe l’oeil
• perspective drawing
• principles of geometry
• orders of architecture
• scenic carving using polystyrene
• clothwork including architectural and portrait
• sign-writing
• up to six weeks professional attachment

Graduates of this course have gone on to become freelance scenic artists at such theatres as the Royal Opera House, Royal Court, Garrick Theatre, Barbican and National Theatre and have worked in television, film, exhibitions and interior design.

Entry Requirements
• We would consider it desirable, but not essential, for applicants to possess a first degree in fine art or an arts based subject and previous practical understanding of the discipline

Admissions
• Intake of up to three students in September each year
• You will be asked to bring a portfolio and samples of previous work to your interview. Your portfolio should contain samples of original work where possible.

Drawings, paintings, printmaking and mixed media should be included. Sketchbooks should show the process of
creative thinking which supports the finished work.
