THE
RADA SUMMER SCHOOL ( 10 July - 3 August 2007 )
The RADA Summer
School has been in existence for over 30 years and has proved invaluable
for experienced actors, young enthusiasts who may be contemplating
going on to full-time drama training, or for those who wish simply
to explore an interest in the craft.
Based on exploring
Shakespeare from an actors point of view, the course combines
rehearsal of scenes and speeches with intensive classes in the essential
skills for which RADAs training is famous. As well as working
on your pieces, you will be attending classes in voice, speech, movement,
sonnets, stage combat, period dance and action all intended
to support your development as an actor.
You will work
with your own company under expert professional direction,
on scenes from one or more of Shakespeares plays. We ask all
participants to treat each class or rehearsal as a professional commitment,
and to be punctual, disciplined and well-prepared.
The RADA Summer
School reflects RADAs long standing reputation; teaching at
all levels is serious and professional therefore it must be
understood that this is in no way a casual summer course. Applicants
are not asked to audition, but to supply as much information as possible
about any previous acting experience; the groups on the course are
organised in such a way as to provide four stimulating and satisfactory
weeks for both seasoned performers and absolute beginners.
DATES
The course will begin on Tuesday 10 July and finish on Friday 3 August
2007.
QUALIFICATIONS
Students
below the age of 18 are not normally accepted. There is no upper age
limit but older applicants are advised that the course is physically
demanding. The majority of students are usually in their 20’s, many
of the classes demand quite a high level of energy.
Fluent, confident knowledge of the English language is essential.

ORGANISATION
AND OUTLINE
Emphasis
is on group work. Students will be divided into separate groups of approximately
sixteen people, each group with its own professional leader.
The
decision of the Academy with regard to groupings is not open for negotiation.
Each
applicant will be sent a questionnaire requesting information about
your experience (or otherwise) of acting. The groupings are then organised
so that each student has the best possible chance of making progress
at the most appropriate pace. 100% commitment to the work, however,
is required from every student.
HOURS
OF WORK
Classes
generally take place between 10am and 6pm Monday to Friday. The classes
are not optional. You are expected to treat these as professional
rehearsal calls.
Punctuality
is essential; records are kept of class attendance, which are taken
into account when the RADA certificate is issued at the end of the course.
STAFF
Tutors
are drawn from the Academys senior staff and directors along with
distinguished guest teachers from the profession.
CERTIFICATE
The
Royal Academy of Dramatic Art’s Certificate stating a minimum number
of contact hours will be awarded on completion of the course.
UNIVERSITY
CREDITS
In the case of students who are attending courses
at Universities in North America (or elsewhere) it is a matter for each
University to decide whether to include the RADA Summer School course
as part of their student accreditation process.
FACILITIES
The RADA library has a unique collection of some 25,000 theatre-related
books.
Participants are
welcome to make use of this facility on payment of a returnable deposit.
RADAs newly-refurbished
premises in central London provide the ideal base for visits to productions.
Students are encouraged to see as many professional theatre productions
as possible. Details can be obtained from RADAs Box Office which
can sometimes arrange tickets.
Some evening events
are organised during the Summer School, for example play readings, karaoke
and improvisation nights, in the public bar in the Gower Street premises.

includes lunch, Monday to Friday.

note there are no RADA scholarships available for short
courses.

will result in the forfeiture of the entire course fee.
WHAT TO BRING
All accepted students must arrive with a fully
prepared audition speech (Shakespeare) of their own choosing, not more
than two minutes in length, which they maybe called upon to perform
for their director and other members of the group. You should bring
your own copy of The Complete Works of Shakespeare (our current preferred
